I know I’m still basically talking to myself, but…
I was reading a story about “Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees” and I wasn’t surprised but I was appalled. “to many Mexican-American students at Live Oak, this was a big deal. They say they were offended by the five boys and others for wearing American colors on a Mexican holiday“. Allow me to be clear. I am married to a immigrant. I am actually for increased immigration. I have absolutely nothing against legal immigrants from Mexico.
However! I have two major issues with what has happened to our immigration system.
A: Our system has become highly preferential towards immigrants from Spanish speaking countries. It has now reached the point that we see presidential debates in Spanish and our immigration offices use Spanish (but no other language besides English) and it basically sends a clear message that we are showing favoritism towards certain types of immigrants. This is furthered by the look the other way policy regarding illegal immigration. It is either legal or illegal, it is either ok or it’s not. When you tell a group of people that it’s ok, you can come to our country but you don’t have to speak our language and you don’t even have to obey our laws you are asking for trouble.
B: The end result is we have a increasingly large population of people that, in part because of their lack of assimilation, do not pay federal income tax, are entitled to a great deal of federal funding and are essentially charity cases. Yet, because of their lack of assimilation they do not even identify themselves as American! They leave their country because it is horrible, yet stake their claim to be here and turn this land into one like their homeland. At a certain point our tolerance of this becomes something else. It becomes a surrender of our lands. When it reaches the point that the American flag is deemed offensive to Mexicans in America? I think some things need to change… come back here when you’re ready to obey our laws and respect our country.
Here’s a update: “American flag shirts ignite firestorm”
A few tidbits:
“”It’s disrespectful to do it on Cinco de Mayo,” said Jessica Cortez, a Live Oak sophomore. “They can be a patriot on some other day. Not that specific day.“”
“Locally, about 200 Hispanic students walked out of Live Oak and Ann Sobrato high schools, chanting “Si se puede” and “We want respect” and disrupting traffic as they marched through Morgan Hill to demonstrate their support for Mexico.”
I don’t think they marched nearly far enough…
