Humor Me

One thing I find lacking from a lot of blogs is the ability to make me laugh, or, in truth to amuse me at all. Surely my perspective is partly to blame, but a lot of blogs really are just boring. As I meander, I find blogs that seem to exist to try to get people to read them. I see many blog posts about getting people to visit, or writing to attract visitors. This seems rather backwards to me. If you can’t get anyone to read what you’re writing (and that matters to you) them perhaps you should stop. I’m not saying everyone has to write a blog to cater to me, though it would be nice. Come on, if I wanted to read stuff that wasn’t funny I’d read things I wrote.

One reason I like Obnoxio and GrEaT sAtAn”S gIrLfRiEnD is because they don’t take themselves too seriously. They get that they can write about serious things without being dry and clinical. They also both have a sense of humor. So, as I wade through blogs, there’s certainly a element of “show me the funny“. Sometimes when I find a blog I like, it isn’t the outright humor so much as a sense of whimsy that might amuse me. Take Moose and Squirrel for example, if you’re willing to name your blog that and poke fun at yourself, you pass muster.

To be clear, I am not saying that a blog has to be humorous. Let’s be frank, most blogs are not written by brilliant writers or intrepid reporters. Most blogs are just some random jackass saying stuff. If I’m going to go out of my way to read what some random jackass has to say, I’d like it to at least be amusing. The best way to quit a jobThere’s a certain hypocrisy to my complaining in a dry rambling manner about people not being amusing. I will say in my defense I’ve gone out of my way to try and find people who are not as boring as I.

As I wandered, I was displeased to find that most blogs lack an element of humor. Some have it, but most just come off as bitter when they try to be snarky and many seem too pretentious to try to amuse their readers. There is humor out there though. Some recognize that if they are not actually funny themselves, they can at least find things that are funny and bring it to our attention. For example, AmyOops brought us a few pictures of Spectre’s hero.

There are some out there that hit just the right note and are indeed brilliantly funny. Take Hyperbole and a Half, for example. Modest artistic offerings are presented in such a funny way and with such witty writing that you have some tremendously amusing offerings . This, is how you get a legion of followers. You toss aside the self-importance, acknowledge your shortcomings, and present us with incredibly funny content.

Previously I wrote about my quest for conservative comics, and not surprisingly, this intersected my search for humorous blogs. I stumbled across Delta Bravo Sierra and immediately came to the conclusion that it has to be a conservative comic. It was about the military and not anti-military… So, I read through the comics a bit. I have to confess to not being overly amused, but as I trudged through I found some funny, and yes the occasional conservative strips.

I applaud you if you made it this far, goodbye now.

Yah, I create the dang comic and I’d have to agree with you a hundred percent. Mildly amusing at times? Maybe. Anything more than that? No. Not really. I’ve been really struggling with that lately. However, they say the road to recovery starts with admitting your problem. meh

As I wrote that I have to confess to feeling a bit condescending, but I dismissed that by asking myself who the hell was going to get all the way to the bottom of what I wrote anyway?

To be clear, I can’t draw a straight line and I’m only funny unintentionally. I do appreciate your work but honesty compels me to say it wasn’t always my style humor. I suppose a military person (like Spectre) might have a better appreciation.

It must be a great challenge to try to decide if you want to be funny, topical, and/or tell a story, all in such a limited format. I applaud both the effort and the accomplishment. If I ever do a comics page of some sort I’ll be sure to include your work (I already made up my mind to do this thing so it’s not a concession).

True enough, the sort of people who really dig the cartoon are hardcore military folk or their supporters. For them, the existance of the comic is enough. It doesn’t even have to be funny. Which is a good thing. Cause you’ve seen the level of humor. esh.

Still, if I’m going to keep up the energy to continue to do the thing I’m thinking I’ll have to broaden the humor for a broader audience.

But I’ll have to find a writer. ;-)

Hopefully, if you ever do a comics page such as the one you’re thinking off … DBS will be a better addition than as it now stands.

I’d say I was happy to find it as well. A show of solidarity is important in and of itself.

Best of luck with everything! I’ll say this, my corner of the internet has a lot farther to go (I need another funny writer myself, I lack any sort of talent) than yours. Perhaps by the time I do a comics page I’ll be able to send meaningful traffic your way…
